My wife and I don’t really like guns, but that doesn’t keep us away from owning a couple. I know that sounds contradictory but I’m serious. Now you can argue all day about it, but the fact of the matter is that there is no weapon that has more talking power than a gun and if you ever get into a dangerous conversation, you’d better have one.
I’ve always believed the right to bare arms as an individual right (thank you Supreme Court!). There’s a bunch of really educated people who are really good with words that will argue that the second amendment only applies to a state militia (lawyers, no offence if you are one) but when the Founding Fathers wrote the constitution, I’m pretty sure they didn’t purposefully exclude all the men with guns who chose not to join. Guns were kept for security in the absence of a formal police force (or in the presence of a weak one) and, of course, for hunting so that families and communities could survive. Some people still keep guns for that same purpose. I know I do, just in case…
Perhaps this slight paranoia is brought on by movies like “The Day After Tomorrow” or “Deep Impact”. Perhaps it could be that I am a Christian and the book of Revelations (besides being incredibly confusing) kinda scares me. Whatever the case, I want to be prepared for whatever plausible might happen in that kind of situation.
I guess this makes me just another typical bitter American who clings to his guns and his religion…
On a lighter note, target shooting is a great fairly inexpensive get-together event that is also pretty fun. All you pay for is the ammunition unless you go to a range where the fees can range anywhere from $5 a day to $15 an hour. Granted, that can get a little expensive, but compared to gas spent in an ATV, it’s not bad. Last weekend, I went with my brother-in-laws and a few of their family members out to the desert and we had a blast. Someone even brought drinks (they were non-alcoholic of course) to share.
God bless America and the God given right to bear arms.
